Sports-mad students from Warminster have taken their energy and drive across the world to help develop facilities in South Africa.
Ben Colbourne, Ben Agate, Stewart Lisowski and Peter Drew, all aged 17, who go to Kingdown School in Woodcock Road, travelled out to the Erasmus Monareng High School in Johannesburg in February to teach youngsters leadership skills through sport.
Sheelagh Brown, head of Kingdown School, said: “There’s not a lot of sport in South Africa in the black communities we are working with. The idea behind it is that we will help develop leadership skills in the schools we are linked with.
“The students said it was transforming for them. They also took out £1,000, which was raised by the school so that the school in South Africa could Tarmac an area to play sports.”
The Kingdown students left on January 31 for a week and were responsible for setting up a sports day for 300 primary school children in South Africa.
The visit is part of the Dreams and Teams initiative which has been set up by the Youth Support Trust and the British Council.
