Proud mum Kate Coles, who chose to give birth to her daughter rather than have treatment for bone cancer, celebrated with her husband Matt as baby Izabelle was christened.
Mrs Coles, 30, and Mr Coles, 34, were joined by members of their family at the chapel in St Michael’s Hospital in Bristol on Saturday as their daughter, who was born nine weeks early on February 18, was christened.
Mrs Coles, who calls Izabelle her ‘princess’, had been told by doctors she had to chose between having treatment for her osteosarcoma or continuing with her pregnancy.
Mrs Coles, of St John’s Crescent, Trowbridge, said: “We kept the christening quite quiet.
“I think if it had been at home it would have been a mad one, but we had family at the hospital and Izabelle did get quite a few cards too, it was lovely.
“She was very placid and as good as gold throughout the ceremony, she is always good. We don’t know how long she has to be in hospital for, it’s just something that we need to take day by day.
“We wanted many other family and friends to come along but under the circumstances we had to make it a low key occasion.”
Mrs Coles was first diagnosed with cancer a week after her honeymoon in August 2007 and underwent an operation to remove the cancerous lump, as well as six months of an intensive form of chemotherapy. She fell pregnant soon after her first wedding anniversary, but her cancer returned and doctors found another lump.
Since Izabelle’s birth Mrs Coles has been told the cancer has spread to two other places.
This week the mum said she and Mr Coles had walked around Trowbridge buying cards for their daughter for special occasions throughout her life.
She said the cards were for milestones in Izabelles’s future, including her engagement, wedding day and her birthdays.
She said: “I bought loads of cards, all the things for a girl’s life. It was really hard and I was bawling my eyes out walking around the shops.
“I need to get more, but it’s something I’ll have to do day by day.
“I spent so much money, I bought her a few presents, but also bought cards for my family too.”
Among the presents she and her husband bought baby Izabelle were tiny shoe ornaments.
She said these were particularly special as before she underwent an operation for her cancer she loved wearing high heel shoes.
After an operation on her jaw using bone from her leg, she was unable to wear some of the styles of shoe she used to enjoy, so she and her husband chose to give their daughter the tiny shoes, including one diamanté studded pair, as special gifts.
The proud mum said she had also started a memory box for her daughter that contains all kinds of memorabilia from her life.
She said: “We have made a scrapbook for her that tells the story of my life.
“It has my school reports, achievements, my favourite DVDs and things like that and I know my husband wants her to know all of that too.”
Mrs Coles said she is staying positive about her cancer battle and that she remains a fighter.
Mr Coles added: “I am very proud of my wife and my princess.”
