The town council is working closely with the local Fairtrade supporters group in seeking to gain Fairtrade Town Status for Trowbridge.
This relationship has been in place since the beginning of 2008 and the council is actively supporting the group and its ambition for achieving Fairtrade Town status. This initiative has the support of the Mayor, Cllr John Knight and the Town Clerk Lance Allan. The town council also provides Fairtrade tea and coffee at its premises.
Becoming a Fairtrade Town requires the achievement of five goals as well as demonstrating annually that the public profile and recognition of Fairtrade, is increasing.
The 5 goals are:
1 The council passes a resolution to support Fairtrade and directly use Fairtrade products
2 An increasing number of local shops and cafes provide a range of Fairtrade Products
3 Local business is involved in promoting Fairtrade including a major local town based employer
4 Local media coverage is used to gain popular support for Fairtrade and its promotion #
5 A steering group is convened to coordinate activities and to help to attain Fairtrade status A survey is being planned to establish the level of Fairtrade activity in Trowbridge.
