Frome Town Sports fully deserved their 3-0 win over Bradford United in the Chantry Digital Ltd of Trowbridge-sponsored Knockout Cup after dominating the first half.

Aaron Baines put Sports ahead with a 20 yard drive through a tangle of players and Joe Upshall's clever flicked header doubled their advantage a minute before half-time.

Bradford were more positive after the break and the best shot of the match brought an excellent finger-tip save from the Frome goalkeeper. But when Bradford were reduced to 10 men when Adam Cooksey was sent off for attempting to strike a Frome player, Bradford's chances evaporated although they continued to share the possession.

Frank Alexander managed to toe-poke a third goal which just trickled over the line following a mix-up in the penalty area to give the Sports a relatively easy victory.

Lavington 8, Broughton 2

HOLDERS Lavington began the defence of their trophy with a comfortable 8-2 victory over Broughton.

The hosts, who had been struggling with their league form, opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a strike from the ever-dependable Myles Hickton. Broughton levelled after 37 minutes as their top goal scorer Leigh Rowles-Hitchcock found the back of the Lavington net.

Lavington restored their lead four minutes before the interval as Hickton scored his second goal.

With the second half only three minutes old Broughton found themselves back on level terms with a goal from Sean Fordham, however their joy was short lived as a minute later Jamie Mullings made it 3-2 in Lavington’s favour. Lavington’s fourth goal came in the 54th minute as Myles Hickton completed his hat-trick. Four minutes later it got worse for Broughton as they found themselves reduced to 10 men after Richard Radcliffe was dismissed for aiming abusive language at the referee. Lavington then stepped up the pressure against the ten men and after 61 minutes Myles Hickton scored his fourth and Lavington’s fifth goal. Lavington continued to push forward and made it 6-2 in the 72nd minute as Myles Hickton scored his fifth goal.

The last ten minutes saw Broughton reduced to nine men as Leigh Rowles-Hitchcock limped out of the match with an injury. With the game won Lavington pushed forward for the fun of it and seemed like they would score on every attack, but Lee Corbin proved this was not the case as after rounding the Broughton keeper and with the goal gaping he put his shot into the side netting for the miss of the season.

Lavington did score a further two goals as Jamie Mullings completed his hat-trick for a final score of 8-2.

North Bradley 2, Mere Town YDT 1

NORTH Bradley scraped through to the next round by overcoming Mere Town TDT by the odd goal in three.

The first half was a goal-less affair, but both teams stepped up their game in the second period. Bradley scored first with a goal from Pete Stephenson, before Mere’s Lewis Sheppard equalised.

With extra-time looming, Bradley won the match when Stephenson scored his second goal in the dying seconds.

Seend United 13, The Stiffs 0

ANY hopes of a cup upset in this match were quickly squashed when Seend took the lead after only two minutes through the prolific Gary Higdon. That then soon became 2-0 with Higdon striking from long range.

Lee Jackson made it 3-0 after a great team move ended with him striking home from 10 yards. John Hubbard then made it 4-0 after 20 minutes, driving the ball home from eight yards. Further goals from Tom Robinson, John Hubbard, Gary Higdon and Leigh Stevenson gave Seend a commanding 8-0 half-time lead.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first. The Stiffs goalkeeper made three remarkable saves to prevent Eatough from getting on the score sheet but further goals from Higdon, Hubbard, Stevenson and Chris Styles (2) gave a final score line of 13-0.

All credit must go to the well spirited Stiffs team who never gave up trying, in a game that was also very well refereed.

Steeple Ashton 2, Seend United Reserves 1

STEEPLE Ashton booked their place in the next round with a 2-1 victory over Seend United Reserves.

By the half-time break Ashton had a comfortable two-goal cushion thanks to a goal from Sam Stevens and a Seend own goal. The second half saw Seend fight back and then pull a goal back through Dan Humphries, but Ashton held on for the win.

Trowbridge Town A 1, The Deverills 4

LAST season's beaten finalists The Deverills eased through to the next round with an efficient 4-1 away win against Trowbridge Town A. Last week’s debutants Gary Lewis and Scott Lewis kept their places as Deverills manager Angus McClellan chose to make only one enforced change, Marc Sprangle coming in for injured captain Aaron Stevens.

Trowbridge Town started brightly and took an early lead through Steve Morris, after a simple throw-in and long cross found him without a tight defender and he looped the ball over goalkeeper Scott Lewis. It took a further ten minutes before The Deverills showed their current resilience and pulled level. Good wing work from Lee Carpenter took him into the Town box and quick feet drew the foul from the Town defender to win a penalty. Up stepped last season’s top scorer Mike Payne to despatch the spot kick with ease.

The Deverills took control after the goal and good play from Gary Lewis down the left allowed him to lay the ball on a plate for Payne to notch his second of the game and give the Deverills a 2-1 lead at the interval.

The Deverills came out firing on all cylinders after the break and the defence, led by Adam Lewis, who seems to get better each week, were in no mood to concede any more goals. Bunyard and Sprangle pulled the strings in the middle and Carpenter and Sean Holton sent in crosses in for Lewis and Payne as The Deverills sought to kill the game off. The third goal came from a sublime piece of skill. There seemed little danger as Payne picked the ball up out wide on the right, but with the confidence flowing he scored his fifth goal in two games with a great lob that left the goalkeeper stranded.

McClellan shuffled his pack with the game won, bringing on Hargreaves for Gary Lewis and Pinnell for Sean Holton. Both had chances to increase the lead, but it was Hargreaves who gave McClellan a selection headache by scoring the fourth and decisive goal. Bunyard worked the ball into the towering striker, who swiveled and lashed it into the net.

Westbury United A 5, Semington Magpies 0

THIS all-First Division clash saw struggling Westbury United A forget their league form to thump five goals past Semington Magpies. A solitary first half goal came from Westbury’s James Ayton. The second half saw the hosts dominating the play and score four further goals through Kieran Stone, Chris Storey, Lee Meaden and Phil Allford.

Westwood 2, Freshford United 3

FRESHFORD United booked their place in the next round after coming away with a 3-2 win from their derby match at Westwood.

Neil Hannaford put Freshford in front only for Dan Thorne to equalise. By half-time Freshford had a 3-1 lead as Hannaford scored his second goal and Mark Birleson also netted. The second half saw a fight back by Westwood as they scored their second through Duncan Frew, but they couldn’t find an equaliser.
