Two pensioners were rescued from floodwater after Storm Bert hit Wiltshire “with a vengeance.”
Carolyn and Simon Berridge, aged 70 and 71, were headed home to Devizes on the A342 Monument Hill when they became trapped in floodwater caused by Storm Bert on Sunday, November 24.
“There was a dip in the road, and it was flooded with a vengeance”, said Mrs Berridge.
“It was starting to get a little bit dark and we saw the puddle because we had navigated it a few times before, but as we were coming into a it a truck came from the other side.
“He was going pretty fast and all the spray came over the car, we couldn’t see, and the car spluttered and died, leaving us stuck in the deepest part.”
Luckily the Berridge’s were quickly helped by Roger Edwards, a stranger who had been travelling behind them, who pushed their car out the water along with the help of Roy McFarlane, another passer-by.

The police then arrived and closed the road at both ends of the floodwater.
Carolyn and Simon were further helped by their neighbour Paul Buckingham and his friend Mark Shergold who attempted to jumpstart their car.
When this failed, the couple was left to wait several hours for their car to be recovered but were offered coffee from a nearby resident and were brought supplies by their son Stephen and his partner Zoe.
After facing a long wait for the RAC, they were eventually rescued by private firm G&D 24/7 Recovery.
Mrs Berridge told this paper she doesn’t know what she would have done without the members of the public who came to her aid.
She added: “We didn’t know what to do, we couldn’t open our doors because the water would have come flooding in, it was cold and it was dark
“It was beyond a relief that everyone helped us, I can’t tell you how grateful we are, it really brought tears to my eyes.”

The incident has left the couple celebrating their “sweet” community and was one of dozens of roads hit by flooding around Wiltshire.
Towns like Chippenham, Bradford on Avon, Melksham, and Malmesbury were left underwater with multiple residents and businesses badly affected.
Traffic was also severe in the area due to a spate of road closures, as drivers attempted to navigate the county’s waterlogged highways.
