New research reveals that nearly half of South West home buyers prioritise having a pub nearby.

The data, commissioned by the Long Live the Local campaign, indicated that 46 per cent of South West residents considered a 'good local pub' a top priority when searching for a home.

In fact, 43 per cent of house hunters preferred pubs over schools, places of worship, and gyms.

Lisa Barry, publican at the Rose and Crown in Plymouth, said: "Local pubs are perfect to meet new people and learn about the neighbourhood, as they’re often filled with residents from all corners of the community who consider us an extension of their own home."

The study also highlighted the impact of pub closures on mental health, with 74 per cent of South West residents saying it has adversely affected them.

Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, which runs the Long Live the Local campaign, emphasised the wider social value of pubs in communities.

She said: "Pubs are vital to the lifeblood of our communities and the last thing any new mover wants to see is their local close their doors."
