“Exciting” changes have been announced for a Wiltshire town’s Christmas lights switch-on event.
Devizes Town Council has announced that Father Christmas will turn on the town’s lights at 7pm on Friday, November 29.
This will mark the start of the town’s Winter Festival, organised by Devizes Outdoor Celebratory Arts.
But this year’s event will have one key difference after the town council confirmed the annual fireworks display would be replaced with a “stunning” light show in the Market Place.
It is hoped this switch will create a more “inclusive” environment for people and animals and reduce the event’s environmental impact.

A town council spokesperson said: “We are thrilled to announce some exciting news regarding this year's Christmas light switch-on.
“The town council and DOCA have taken community feedback into account, particularly regarding noise and environmental concerns related to fireworks.
“This year, instead of our usual fireworks display, we are delighted to present a stunning light show.
“The light show not only creates a magical experience but is also a more sustainable alternative to traditional fireworks, which can release harmful chemicals into the atmosphere and contribute to litter.
“The display also creates a more inclusive environment allowing everyone to enjoy the festivities without the distress that loud explosions can cause to pets, wildlife, and individuals.”
