Wiltshire has been named as one of the best counties in the UK – but narrowly missed out on a top 10 spot.

The county was ranked as the 13th best in the country by The Telegraph during a recent study that compared data across 41 categories to try and come up with a definitive list.

The national paper has been ranking the UK’s 48 counties from best to worst each year since 2022.

Its methodology takes into account everything from crime rate to number of golf courses.

This year Wiltshire narrowly missed out on a place in the top 10, rising four places from 17th to 13th.

Meanwhile Devon came out on top to be named the country’s best.

Wiltshire finished the process with a total score of 588, just a few points behind nearby Gloucestershire in 12th place.

The county was rated highly for its natural wonders, including major tourist attractions like Stonehenge, and its peace and quiet.

Wiltshire was also among the UK’s best places in the ‘luxury’ category, which takes into account an area’s number of Michelin stars, hotels with AA Red Stars, and award-winning venues.

Its lowest scoring category was history and culture.
