Plans to install traffic lights at one of Wiltshire’s most notorious crash black spots will not begin until next summer, says Wiltshire Council.

The council has confirmed that it is currently in talks with Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) over the installation of traffic lights at Black Dog Crossroads.

The notorious A360 junction south of Devizes regularly sees crashes and has previously been named one of the county’s most dangerous junctions.

Traffic lights are planned for the crossroads after the council abandoned plans to realign the junction in July, as part of a £2 million road safety scheme.

But the installation cannot begin until an agreement has been reached between the council and SSE.

Cllr Nick Holder, the cabinet member for highways, says that discussions are ongoing, but construction is not expected to start until next summer and may be subject to change.

“We are in discussion with SSE about the most appropriate mechanism to introduce the necessary power supply to the location.

“SSE will be a key partner in this project and until we have agreement with SSE on this it isn’t possible to set a firm date for the works to start, but we are working towards construction in summer 2025.”

The lengthy wait for work to begin on the project has caused concern over the impact of potential delays amongst residents and road safety campaigners.

Michael Maxwell, a campaigner who has been calling for traffic lights at the junction for years, is afraid of the potential for more crashes during this wait.

Speaking after a crash in August, he said: “I told them there would be a string of accidents at the junction and it is inevitable that there will continue to be.

“Is Wiltshire Council prepared to live with that? They’ve made a good decision, but I want to see them action it as soon as possible.

“My fear is that a motorcyclist would be involved in a crash with a van, and they may not survive that.”

Wiltshire Council had initially planned to realign the junction to improve sight lines but has been pressing ahead with a traffic light scheme since a £2 million investment into road safety across the county was announced.
