Plans have been submitted for the “much needed” expansion of one of the biggest schools in a Wiltshire town.

The John of Gaunt School in Trowbridge has applied to construct a new modular classroom building at its site on Wingfield Road.

This new facility would replace four temporary buildings that are currently in place and would house 12 classrooms, an office, and a cleaning cupboard.

The school, which joined the Equa Multi Academy Trust last year, says this development would upgrade its current facilities and provide additional learning space.

In its design and access statement, a spokesperson said: “The proposal provides a much needed improvement to the classrooms provided by the existing modular buildings, with improvements in the general aesthetics, thermal comfort, and access arrangements.

“It also increases the number of classrooms on the site allowing for improved options, whilst consolidating a number of dispersed classrooms into one centrally located building.

“There are also benefits relating to SEN accommodation for the wider Unitary Authority of Wilshire.

“The proposal is wholly positive improving the overall site and allowing the school to continue to provide a good standard of education to the pupils.”

A public consultation on the proposal will run until November 12 before Wiltshire Council makes a decision.
