POLICE and the fire service have launched a joint investigation into an overnight blaze at a property in Codford as work to make the house safe continues.

Firefighters from Warminster, Wilton, Westbury, Salisbury and Amesbury were called to reports of a fire on High Street at 10.40pm last night (October 31).

Around 35 firefighters were tackling the blaze at its height.

The Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service remains at the scene with Wiltshire Police, Wiltshire Council and energy firm SSE.

Codford's High Street remains shut in both directions.

Firefighters will be there “for the majority of the day dampening down and inspecting the integrity of the building” until it is deemed safe.

A fire service spokesperson said: “At 10.40pm last night, firefighters from Warminster, Wilton, Westbury, Salisbury and Amesbury were called to reports of a property fire in High Street, Codford.

“When they arrived, firefighters found a house fully involved in fire.

“At the height of this incident, we had seven fire engines, a water carrier and the aerial ladder platform from Yeovil (Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue) on the scene (approximately 35 firefighters).

“Crews wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reels and three main jets to bring the fire under control.

“Firefighters remain at the scene of this incident and are working closely with partners in Wiltshire Council, Wiltshire Police and SSE.

“A joint fire investigation with Wiltshire Police has begun.”

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “Please be aware that Codford High Street is closed in both directions this morning.

“The road is expected to be closed for at least an hour.

“We will provide an update when it has reopened.”
