Today is Halloween, which for children (and residents) up and down the country means an evening of trick or treating.

With children patrolling the streets in their spookiest costumes and candlelit pumpkins outside doors, everyone will be hoping the weather will also be a treat.

Good news for ghosts and ghoulies as the Met Office says that while there could be some spots of rain in the southwest, Swindon and Wiltshire’s skies should be dry and cloudy this evening. There is a less than 5 per cent chance of rain.

The day is starting with some theatrical mist, but this will change to cloud by late morning.

The temperature could peak today at 16 degrees, with an average of 14 and sunset will be at 4.41pm - that means kick-off time for the evening’s frivolities.

Across the southwest, it will be “mainly cloudy, though [with] some brighter spells, especially later”.

Today it will be “a cloudy start with mist and patchy fog gradually lifting, allowing brighter spells to develop later on.

“The odd spot of rain may be felt along the south coast, but remaining dry for many, and feeling mild in the sunshine. Maximum temperature 16 °C.”

And tonight in the southwest, “cloud thickens once more through this evening and overnight, with the odd spot of rain returning under the thickest layer”.
