Great Western Hospital departments are set to move in changes described by the institution as “exciting” following a £33.5m expansion.

The Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Medically Expected Unit (AMU) are currently in separate buildings and are both moving into the old Emergency Department site, which has been recently remodelled.

The emergency department moved into a new building following a £33.5m expansion that finished in July.

SDEC allows specialists, where appropriate, to assess, diagnose and treat patients on the same day of arrival who would otherwise have been admitted to hospital. The AMU helps assess, investigate and treats patients admitted urgently from home by their GP.Inside the new Emergency DepartmentInside the new Emergency Department (Image: Dave Cox)

It is hoped that the changes will improve care provision and make it easier for patients to move around.

A GWH spokesperson said: “We’re excited to announce that our Same Day Emergency and Medically Expected Units will soon be relocated to the newly remodelled old Emergency Department.

“This change will join up all emergency services, making it easier for patients to move between services and receive the right care based on their clinical needs.

“This integration is part of our commitment to providing seamless and efficient care for all our patients.”

It is not stated when the changes will occur, but that updates are coming.
