A key route into Trowbridge town centre is on track to be reopened by mid-November following accessibility improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.
Manvers Street in Trowbridge is benefiting from improvements as part of the government's £16 million investment in the town via the Future High Streets Fund.
Cllr Nick Holder, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for highways, street scene and flooding, said: “The improvement works taking place on Manvers Street are progressing well and we remain on schedule, with the works anticipated to be completed and the closure expected to be lifted by mid-November.
“The final phase involves carrying out footpath improvements along Hill Street, near the former bathroom shop and Kitchener’s Court.
“We are coordinating with utility companies who are planning work on Hill Street to ensure minimal disruption and the best outcome for the area.
“In the meantime, we would like to reassure residents and visitors that all local businesses will remain open as usual throughout this period.”
Manvers Street is a popular route into the town centre for pedestrians from the Sainsbury's store and residential areas.
The aim is to further improve this route by opening up the area in front of Manvers House.
Changes are being made to the existing wall alignment and vegetation that blocks the view to Manvers House has been removed.
Some trees identified as being in poor condition have also been removed.
In addition, the footpath is being widened and paved with slabs to tie in with the surrounding paved areas.
New bus shelters are being provided outside Manvers House to create more space for those waiting for the bus and those walking through Manvers Street.
These will have 'green roofs' designed to support pollinating insects and enhance biodiversity into the town centre and new soft landscaping will be provided.
There will also be enhancements to street lighting with heritage columns being used.
The works represent the third in a series of road improvement schemes that started on Monday, January 15 and are due to last for around 12 months, split across distinct phases.
Four months of work in Fore Street and Wicker Hill were completed in September before the contractors Milestone Infrastructure moved into Manvers Street.
People are already benefiting from these improvements, as well as those made at the junction of Church Street and Union Street, and Castle Street.
Weather permitting all the works should be completed before Christmas 2024.
