Almost 100 homes could be built in Royal Wootton Bassett if Wiltshire Council approves a recently submitted planning application.

After announcing the plans for land near Marlborough Road this summer, an outline planning application has now been put forward by Richborough which proposes up to 95 new homes across three fields on the southern edge of the town.

The applicant reports that the project would create an “attractive, ‘landscape-led’ residential development” that provides “a rich variety of connected landscape spaces, strengthening the defensible edge to the town”.

The site is located near the Royal Wootton Bassett Sewage Treatment Works, but the application notes that “odour sniff testing” has been carried out in the area.

It states: “Odour sniff testing was undertaken on site, including under the supervision of Wessex Water, to determine the presence of any odours within the site.

“The surveys did not detect any sewage-related odours within the site.

“Additionally, odour dispersion modelling of the Sewage Treatment Works confirms that odour levels within the site are below all relevant statutory benchmarks for exposure to odour.”

Wiltshire Council is expected to make a decision by mid-January 2025.
