Plans submitted by Greggs for a vacant unit in a Wiltshire town have been well received, despite previous traffic concerns.

Greggs has lodged an application for replacement signage, a projecting sign, a refreshed shopfront, and other works at Unit Four of the Garden Trading Estate in Devizes, off London Road.

The plans indicate Greggs wants to open a new store, equipped with seating and the typical services offered by the chain, in the former Jewson tool hire and sales shop.

Many residents have backed this proposal, believing it would help the town grow.

Sue Linsley said: “Devizes needs to grow and let different types of outlets in to suit the varying needs of everyone.”

Miriam Dutoy added: “Great idea, lots of businesses around. Devizes has to accept some changes, or it will die.”

Claire Romans said: “I think it will be good and extra jobs for the town. Love a Greggs.”

Cllr Iain Wallis added: “We do have quite a problem with youth unemployment in Devizes, so it is very important to consider that.”

Others were excited at the idea of another “convenient” food outlet in the town.

Ian Wiltshire said: “Don’t see any problem with that, it’s up to the individual if they use it or not.

“Saves going into town and paying to park if you want something.”

Before it was revealed that Greggs would be the potential occupant for the site, planning permission was granted by Wiltshire Council to change the use of the building to retail.

While Devizes Town Council has not commented on the current application, at the time of writing, it did have some objections to the change of use.

Councillors feared the creation of a large shop outside the town centre would not help draw shoppers into other businesses around the town and could create traffic issues.

However, there is already a Greggs store in the Market Place which could potentially allay these concerns and there are no indications this would close as part of the plans.

At the time, a town council spokesperson said: “Core strategy and NPPF policies are that shops should be located in town centres.

“A new large store would be better for the town in the centre rather than on an industrial estate on the edge of town.

“A new shop could attract traffic and parking to cause congestion of Folly Lane at its junction with London Road.”

A Greggs spokesperson said: “Greggs is always looking into new shop locations.

"While we are unable to confirm anything at the moment, we will share any information in due course.”
