A303 traffic update after lorry fire closes major road

The A303 was closed between the A350 at West Knoyle and the A36 at Deptford following a lorry fire at Chicklade on the morning of Monday, September 30.

Crews from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the scene to tackle the blaze and worked for several hours to extinguish it.

Shortly before 2.30pm, it was announced that the route was reopened after the 50 large bales of straw that had caught alight were put out.

The A303 lorry fire (Image: DWFRS) National Highways confirmed there were no longer significant delays in the area after the road was closed for several hours.

The fire service has released pictures of the incident, which was cleared up with the help of a local farmer.

A spokesperson said: “Two members of Wilton Crew were mobilised in the water carrier 32W1 this morning to a lorry fire on the A303 near Chicklade.

“On arrival the crew were tasked with pumping water from the 9,000-litre tank straight into the tank of Mere Fire Station’s 34P1 pump.

“It took some time to move roughly 50 large bales of straw and to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and clear the road.”
