More restrictions come into effect as of 6pm on Monday, September 30 to relieve the pressure on local villages following the A36 closure.

National Highways closed the A36 on August 12 to stabilise the embankments on the southbound carriageway to alleviate subsidence.

The A36 Warminster Road will be fully closed between Limpley Stoke and Monkton Coombe to spring 2025, although a temporary reopening is planned later this month (October).

The chair of Limpley Stoke Parish Council, Ian Barnes, disclosed details of the new traffic management arrangements in an update for residents.

Mr Barnes said that Wiltshire highways department is bringing in the new arrangements from 6pm.

Mr Barnes said: “We have now received details of the new traffic management arrangements from Wiltshire Highways.

“There are a large number of closures and restrictions affecting Limpley Stoke and the wider area, which can be viewed via the Wiltshire Highways Traffic Order link.”

From 6pm, Lower Stoke will be closed to southbound traffic for approximately ten metres from its junction with the B3108.

By separate agreement, coaches, agricultural vehicles, emergency vehicles and special heavy deliveries to the Hop Pole pub and other exceptions have been agreed to support the village businesses.

Access to Lower Stoke and Crowe Hill for northbound traffic from the Church Lane entrance will remain open.

Two-way traffic will be allowed throughout Lower Stoke and Crowe Hill, apart from the ten-metre stretch at the northern end to the B3108 junction.

There will be height, width, and weight restrictions on Church Lane, Midford Lane, Abbey Lane, and Ashes Lane which should limit access by HGVs.

Speed limits will also be in place on several narrow village lanes and on the B3108 near Winsley.

The traffic order will stay in place for 21 days to tie in with the A36 temporarily reopening on Friday, October 18 to allow the A350 at Westbury to be resurfaced.

National Highways said: “We’ll soon be temporarily opening the A36 Warminster Road at Limpley Stoke to allow Wiltshire Council to carry out essential work on the A350.

“Due to the damage to the southern embankment, there will be two-way traffic lights in place to keep everyone safe. However, the road will be open to traffic.

“The road will open on Friday, October 18. It will then stay open over the half-term break and close again on Monday, November 11.”
