Residents in Calne who have suffered flooding in the last week have been visited by their local MP and told they can apply for discretionary grants.

Several people in the town experienced flooding in their homes after heavy rain caused issues around the county.

With the potential for further flooding on the horizon, Chippenham MP Sarah Gibson visited the residents to provide them with support.

(Image: Enya Evans) Ms Gibson said: “Having met with residents of Mill Street and Horsebrook in Calne, I am glad to see Wessex Water has responded and will come out to provide a deep clean of properties affected by sewage.

“There needs to be more investigation into the root causes of this recent flooding that has occurred in areas that, according to the residents, have not flooded for decades.

“I have tabled a Parliamentary question to the Governmental Department responsible and will continue to investigate with Ministers once Parliament returns in October.”

Cllr Robert McNaughton reported that Wiltshire Council would be contacting residents with details of discretionary grants soon but noted that he’d been informed that a new delivery of sandbags was not due until Monday, October 8.

He said: “Seeing what people have gone through first hand really drove home how desperately we need Wiltshire Council and Westminster to work together.”
