A road is still shut due to flooding this morning as the council issues a warning.

While most roads have reopened after days of heavy rain across the county, the B3106 north of Trowbridge is still closed.

However, Wiltshire Council have warned of the possibility of further floods due to forecast rain.

A spokesperson said: "Tollgate Road, Staverton is currently closed due to flooding, but the rain may cause more flooding and standing water on the roads.

"Please drive carefully, allow extra time for travel and do not attempt to drive through floodwater."

Access to the B3106 Tollgate Road is controlled by floodgates which physically bar access to the road to prevent access when the road it floods.

They were fitted as the road frequently floods, yet cars were ignoring warnings against driving down the link between Holt and Staverton.

Despite the barriers being closed, one car still managed to become stranded in the water beyond the gate.

It is not known how the car became stranded, although an enquiry has been sent to Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The fire service carried out 22 operations to save 20 cars and 30 passengers from the one road from 2004 to 2019, when the gates were fitted.

While other roads in Wiltshire have reopened an ongoing yellow weather warning for rain covering the whole south of England could mean more wet weather and more groundwater.

Flood alerts remain in place around the Mid and Upper Bristol Avon areas and east Swindon.
