Drivers have been warned not to ignore road closures after several cars became stranded in flood water across Wiltshire.

Heavy rain and flooding have battered multiple parts of the county throughout the week and a number of drivers have become stranded as a result.

Wiltshire Police has revealed that some of these incidents were due to drivers ignoring road closures.

The force has warned people to avoid doing this with more rain set to hit.

A spokesperson said: “Rain is here to stay. This means wet roads, localised flooding, and where unavoidable, road closures.

“There are many areas prone to flooding… if these roads are signed as closed, please do not ignore the signs or move them- they are there for a reason- to keep you safe.

“Unfortunately we have had a few road closures ignored this week which has caused us to be tied up with pulling vehicles out of standing water when it could have been avoided.”

Drivers tackling wet conditions are advised to double their stopping distance, slow down if steering becomes unresponsive, and avoid driving through flood water if in doubt about its depth.

Any motorists who have passed through flood water should test their brakes to ensure they are still working.
