Chaos spread across Wiltshire's roads and towns on Monday as parts of the county were left battered by floods.

Amber weather warnings were issued by the Met Office for Dorset and Wiltshire on Monday, September 23.

The A345 Marlborough Road in Pewsey, the B3098 Westbury Road in Coulston and the A346 Marlborough Road to M4 are just some of the roads which were closed due to flooding before 10am, and rain continued to batter down throughout the day.

Those in Calne were spotted wading through knee-deep murky waters to get to their homes.

Just after midday, Calne Town Council announced that the path across the bridge at Beach Terrace would be closed until further notice as the flood gates on the Church Street side were closed.

As the afternoon progressed, Wiltshire Council received reports of a tree coming down and worsening flooding on Ashley Road in Bradford on Avon and further road closures between Erlestoke and Coulston and in Chippenham.

A statement from Chippenham Police read: “Please be aware of road closures in place on the A4 running through Derry Hill, between Chippenham and Calne, due to severe flooding under the Millennium Bridge.

“A number of cars are currently stranded in the area. Further flooding has also been reported in Mile Elm.

”Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and expect delays in the area."

The B3106 north of Trowbridge was closed on Tuesday, September 24 with the floodgates at Staverton, which are used whenever the road fills with water.

Town Councils across Wiltshire are now assessing the damage of Monday's floods as work begins to drain water and reopen roads.

As of midday on Tuesday, eight roads in Wiltshire remained closed as a result of the flooding.

These included:

  • B3098 Erlestoke
  • B3107 Bradford Road, Melksham
  • Toll Gate Road, Staverton
  • A3102 Wyatts Lake, Bromham
  • Turf House Lane, Bremhill
  • Mill Lane, Broughton Gifford
  • Reybridge, Lacock
  • The Wharf, Lacock

"There is lots of standing water on the roads in the county, so please continue to drive safely and to the conditions at all times," said a spokesperson for Wiltshire Council.
