A road has been closed by flooding as water fills the surrounding fields in a spot known for being vulnerable.
The B3106 north of Trowbridge has been closed with the floodgates at Staverton, which are used whenever the road fills with water.
The gates aim to stop drivers from getting stuck in flood waters from the nearby River Avon after ignoring warning signs not to use the road when it is heavily flooded.
The road crosses a flood alert area for the Mid Bristol Avon area, which warns that “areas most at risk include low lying land and roads between Melksham and Bathford.
“Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.”
Prior to the gate being fitted in 2019, drivers routinely ignored the flashing flood warning signs or skirted round the cones placed there.
Rescue crews were then being called out to go into the fast-flowing flood waters to rescue drivers who had tried their luck and had got stuck when their vehicle engines were overwhelmed.
