Controversial plans for a large development between Trowbridge and Hilperton have moved a step closer to fruition.

In 2022, Barratt Homes received permission for the construction of 187 homes on Elizabeth Way.

The application received numerous objections and residents described themselves as “devastated” that the number of homes had increased by 82 since the original plans.

(Image: Barratt Homes) Two years on, ten conditions for the scheme have now been discharged by Wiltshire Council, concerning details such as the surface water scheme and external lighting.

However, the local authority has requested further information on details such as footways and estate roads prior to development starting on the site.

Despite this, the discharging of thirteen conditions for the development marks a significant milestone for Barratt Homes.

Some councillors have raised concerns about the density of development suggested for the area in the local plan.

It proposes that 4,420 homes and 27.4 ha of employment land should be provided in Trowbridge by 2038, including the development near Elizabeth Way and north-east of Hilperton.

The chair of the Hilperton Area Action Group recently claimed this would be “the end of the community” and that the consultation had been “appalling”.

Wiltshire Council strongly refuted this and reminded residents that 16 in-person engagement events were held around the county and over 10,000 representations were received.
