Fifth Wiltshire flood alert names most at risk areas

The alert for the River Kennet and its tributaries stretches from Newbury through Marlborough to Avebury and Winterbourne Bassett.

Issued yesterday evening, it states that “river levels are rising rapidly on the Upper Kennet in the Winterbourne Monkton area following recent heavy rain.

“Therefore, flooding of low lying land and roads is expected from this afternoon.”

The most severely affected area is expected to be the areas closest to the River Kennet where it passes through Winterbourne Monkton, Berwick Bassett and Avebury.

The flood alert area covers: River Kennet from Berwick Bassett to Newbury including Winterbourne Monkton, Marlborough, Ramsbury, Hungerford, Denford, Kintbury and Newbury; also the River Og, the River Aldbourne, the Froxfield Stream, the River Dun and the River Shalbourne.

There are also two flood alerts active in Swindon, one in the Mid Birstol Avon area and the Upper Bristol Avon area.

Low lying land and roads are the most vulnerable to flooding and some Wiltshire roads are still closed following the heavy rain, most notably the A4 between Chippenham and Calne.
