Calne street underwater as town hit with heavy rain

Beach Terrace in Calne was closed by the town council until further notice on Monday, September 23, after murky flood water poured into the street.

This comes after an amber flood warning was issued for parts of Dorset and Wiltshire, with relentless rain which started at the weekend continuing throughout Monday.

Photos from the scene suggest that Calne is the worst area in Wiltshire, as benches, bins and cars are barely visible beneath the floodwater on Beech Terrace.

Residents have been seen struggling to get back to their homes, wading in knee-deep water.

The scene in Calne on Monday (Image: Trevor Porter) (Image: Trevor Porter) An emergency alternative route has now been put in place for pedestrians which follows along Phelps Parade, the High Street and the Strand/New Road to Ivy Walk (by Kerry Crescent dentists).

In an urgent message to residents, a spokesperson for Calne Town Council said: "The path across the bridge at Beach Terrace will be closed until further notice as the flood gates on the Church Street side are now closed.

"The flooding and raised manhole on Church Street has also been reported to the relevant authorities.

"Please be careful as drains can rise in flood water. If you are aware of any blocked gullies you can report them to Wiltshire Council."

As well as the closure of Beach Terrace, pedestrians wanting to use Church Street should take an alternative route through the car park and pathway to the side of Bank House.
