Flood alerts have been issued across large areas of Wiltshire in the south and north of the county.

One has been put in place for the Mid River Avon and tributaries including Melksham and Bradford on Avon.

The flood alerts reads: "River levels are rising on the Bristol Avon and Semington Brook as a result of the continuing rainfall showers received yesterday and today, the 23 September 2024."

It adds: "Currently areas most at risk include low lying land and roads between Melksham and Bathford. The flood gates at Holt Road may be closed.

"We are monitoring rainfall and river levels and are checking rivers for blockages in the area. Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water."

A flood warning is also in place for the Upper Bristol Avon area and and tributaries including Malmesbury, Dauntsey, Chippenham and Calne.

It reads: "Property flooding is not expected, the area’s most at risk include low lying areas in Tetbury, Badminton, Brook End at Luckington, Corsham, Lacock and the road at Reybridge."

Another applies to the West Swindon area to above Water Eaton, most affecting the areas closest to the River Ray in the Rodbourne and Westmead areas of Swindon.

Another is in place for River Cole, Dorcan Brook and South Marston Brook, affecting the Lower Stratton area of Swindon.

The government website says that while “we are not expecting flood warnings today… the weather outlook shows further rain forecast for the rest of this week that may result in flood warnings.”
