Further disruption is likely to take place on Monday, September 23 linked to the A36 closure on the Wiltshire border.

More restrictions are facing drivers trying to avoid the A36 closure between Monkton Combe and Limpley Stoke.

They will include village road closures, 20mph speed restrictions and a full closure to all southbound traffic except buses and service vehicles at the end of Lower Stoke where it meets the B3108.

The details were unveiled by National Highways officials during a meeting with Freshford and Limpley Stoke parish councillors and Wiltshire Council ward member Johnny Kidney on Wednesday, September 18.

Representatives from Bath & North East Somerset Council also attended the meeting.

National Highways is carrying out essential safety improvements on the A36 Warminster Road near Limpley Stoke to stabilise the southbound embankment and keep the carriageway safe.

Project managers said they are still on target to complete the work, hopefully by the end of February next year.

They said: "We understand that road closures are frustrating. By fully closing the road, we can get this scheme done safely and quickly, causing less disruption overall."

Limpley Stoke Parish Council chair, Ian Barnes said: “There will be further restrictions placed on Abbey Lane, Church Lane, Ashes Lane and Midford Lane.

“These will limit the height, width and weight of vehicles allowed."

In addition, Pipehouse Lane will be subject to a separate closure order, and Church Lane will have a 20mph speed restriction applied for the duration of the A36 works.

This is separate from the Traffic Regulation Order requested by Limpley Stoke Parish Council which is still being considered.

Lower Stoke, Crowe Lane and Woods Hill will still be two-way to traffic.

Mr Barnes added: “There will be a full closure to all southbound traffic except buses and service vehicles at the end of Lower Stoke where it meets the B3108.

These plans will be implemented from Monday, September 23 or earlier if possible.

Wiltshire Council highways department is talking to Network Rail and others to minimise disruption during repairs to both the Lower Stoke railway bridge and the bridge over the Kennet & Avon Canal on the B3108. They are hoping to have both repaired at the same time.
