Swindon and Wiltshire has been named the eighth best location to find buried treasure in the UK.

The study, which analysed government data on treasure finds across UK counties from 2012 to 2023, revealed the regions with the most recorded discoveries.

Norfolk topped the list with 1,201 recorded finds, followed by Suffolk with 776, and Essex with 709.

Lincolnshire, Hampshire, Kent and North Yorkshire were next, ahead of Wiltshire and Swindon with 526 treasure finds.

The study highlights the richness of heritage in the areas, with Norfolk's history dating back to the Iceni tribe, who were ancient Britons living in the area before the Roman conquest.

Suffolk, along with Norfolk, was part of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of East Anglia, a region frequently raided by Vikings and later incorporated into the Norse-occupied Danelaw under Danish King Guthrum.

Essex, with its flat, rural landscapes, is also noted as a prime region for finding hidden riches.
