A fire in a Wiltshire fish and chips shop closed a central route for hours.

The incident happened on Saturday, September 7 when fire crews, called to Warminster, found an oil fryer on fire at the Golden Fish Inn on George Street.

Police closed the road and part of Portway while the incident was being dealt with.

A Wiltshire Times photographer at the scene reported that around 25 firefighters were in attendance, with the first fire engines arriving at 11.20am.

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 11:11am with reports of a property fire on George Street, Warminster.

"Two fire engines were initially mobilised from Warminster and Trowbridge.

"On arrival, crews found an oil fryer on fire on the ground floor of the commercial premises which had spread to the extractor system. 

"Breathing apparatus wearers used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire and a further four appliances were mobilised from Mere, Tisbury and Shaftesbury along with a fire appliance from Devon and Somerset.  

"The stop came in at 2:11pm and no injuries were reported."

The road reopened just before 5pm on Saturday.

Everyone inside the chippy and the flats above the takeaway evacuated the building safely.
