Controversial plans to convert a town centre retail space into retirement accommodation will be decided on appeal.

In January Wiltshire Council refused an application by Churchill Retirement Living to change the use of unit four at Orchard Lodge in Calne into residential accommodation.

The development, which was built by the applicant within the last three years, sits at The Pippin, near Sainsbury’s, and is made up of four commercial units and 39 apartments for retirees.

But last year the developer lodged plans to convert the fourth retail unit into another two-bedroom retirement apartment.

Wiltshire Council refused this development over fears the loss of commercial space would “adversely impact the vitality and viability of the town centre”.

Churchill Retirement Living has appealed this decision and claims that the unit has received no long or short term offers despite being marketed for over a year, sparking concerns about a “lack of interest”.

The appellant claims the unit being occupied as a dwelling for retirees would be “far more beneficial” for the town centre than a vacant space.

The application will now be determined by the planning inspectorate and interested parties can have their say until Tuesday, September 17.

All four commercial units at the development remain on the market for between £1,125 and £1,792 per month.
