Plans are being considered for changes to a “horrendous” junction on a busy A-road through a Wiltshire town.
Calne residents have been asked for their views on proposed changes to the White Hart Roundabout, where the A4 meets the A3102 and The Green across two-mini roundabouts.
A report has been carried out on potential pedestrian crossing improvements for the junction following a request from the Calne Area Board.
The project aims to create a “safer environment” for members of the public.
This report found that the current arrangement and “busy environment” demand a high level of concentration from drivers, meaning they are “less likely to be aware of pedestrian activity around them.”
It added that some of the signs in the area are “poorly sited”, reducing visibility of and for pedestrians, while the carriageway surface is in a “poor condition.”

The report recommended that one of three solutions be implemented to tackle these issues.
The first of these suggestions would cost £24,000 and involves the replacement of the existing island with a pedestrian refuge fit for purpose, alongside new dropped kerb crossing points with tactile paving and bollards on either side of the A4.
Option two would relocate and replace the existing dropped kerb crossing point and provide new pedestrian bollards, at a cost of £6,000.
Option three, which has an estimated cost of £43,000, would combine the first two options alongside the removal of the northern mini roundabout.
This would be replaced with a T-junction and there would also be amendments to existing kerb-lines, carriageway resurfacing, signs and new road markings.
The Calne Town Council planning committee will consider these options and submit their comments, as part of a consultation on the proposal, at a meeting on Wednesday, August 7.
Residents have already submitted feedback on the plans, with options one and three each receiving five votes in favour and option two receiving one.
Seven votes have been lodged for alternative solutions like traffic lights and building a bypass.
One person surveyed said: Something further up along London Road so that people can safely cross.
“That road is absolutely horrendous especially during school weeks.
“How there's not been more accidents is beyond me. Not going to be long before a school child gets seriously hurt or worse.”
Another added: “Option three and reduce the speed limit to 20mph.
“Cars rush round into Silver Street. Exiting from South Place is very dangerous with cars turning left off London Road into Silver Street.”
