Motorists ignoring a ‘no right turn’ sign while trying to avoid a lengthy road closure in Chippenham have been warned they face prosecution.
Officers have received reports of drivers repeatedly turning right into Wood Lane from Avenue La Fleche in a bid to navigate the closure on London Road while lengthy works are carried out by Wessex Water in the area.
And now police have warned motorists that these actions are putting other road users and pedestrians at risk and increasing the chances of crashes.
Writing on Facebook, police said: "The diversion route for this road closure is to follow Pewsham Way around the outskirts of the Pewsham Estate, which is a more suitable route for the high volume of traffic currently driving through residential streets.
"Police will be increasing their patrols in the area and prosecuting drivers who ignore the sign."
The road closure is in place until Saturday, August 31 and is part of a six-month project to upgrade the town's sewer network costing £2 million.
