Disabled parking bays at a Wiltshire car park are to be resurfaced to make them safer for the people using them.

Wiltshire Council has announced it will be resurfacing part of the Church Street car park in Melksham on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 30 and 31.

The aim is to improve the disabled parking bays to increase safety and accessibility. The work may be subject to change dependant on weather conditions.

During the work, the disabled bays will be moved and signs will be in place to show the temporary relocation. This will allow the works to be carried out safely.

As part of the works, new parking machines will be installed in August and placed to provide easier access for people with disabilities.

The move is part of an ongoing investment by Wiltshire Council to make it easier for people to pay.

The new machines will be more reliable and will accept cash, plus contactless payments with card or mobile phone. People can also pay by text or the MiPermit app if they wish to.

Cllr Nick Holder, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for highways, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these works, but this will improve the quality of the parking bays, as well as provide easier access for people with disabilities.

“The parking machine upgrade programme is part of a £380,000 investment into our car parks which will see new machines installed across the whole of Wiltshire.

“We understand the needs of all our communities, and the differences between them, which is why this upgrade will provide people with more choice on how they want to pay, as well as making them more accessible.

“A key priority in our business plan is to have well-connected, vibrant communities and these improvements will ensure our car parks can be used by everyone.

“We look forward to the rest of the parking machines being installed over the next couple of months.”

The new machines are compliant with the Equality Act 2010 and all locations have been reviewed in line with the Department for Transport Inclusive Mobility guidance, with ramps installed where appropriate and ensuring the machines are positioned to allow easier access for all users.

The disruption to users during the installation of the machines will be minimal as other machines will remain available to take payments throughout the works.
