A-roads in Wiltshire could see more traffic with a major route into the county to close until next year.

The A36 Warminster Road will close at Limpley Stoke, near Bath, from Monday, August 12, until next spring.

During this lengthy closure, National Highways will work to stabilise the southbound embankment following cracking alongside the carriageway.

It is hoped these measures, along with drainage improvements, will prevent further damage and movement.

The closure is expected to cause significant delays in the area, likely to affect drivers travelling between Wiltshire and Bath.

It is also expected that there will be more traffic on Wiltshire roads, with the official diversion route taking motorists on the A4 and A350 past Corsham, Chippenham, Melksham, Trowbridge, Westbury, and Warminster.

Hugh Campbell, senior project manager for National Highways, said: “Safety is our number one priority and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but need to fix the root of the problem to ensure it doesn’t happen again and that motorists and pedestrians remain safe at all times.

“We understand that road closures are frustrating, but by fully closing the road, we can get this scheme done safely and quickly, causing less disruption overall.

“Once it's all complete, these improvements will benefit road users and the local community for many years to come.”
