A Wiltshire lake has reopened to the public after toxic algae sparked a lengthy closure for safety reasons.

The lake in Warminster’s Pleasure Grounds has been shut since Tuesday, July 2, after the appearance of a blue-green algae bloom which was potentially dangerous to humans and dogs.

During this time, people have not been able to hire boats to go out onto the water, while the model boat club has also been unable to meet at the park.

But after weeks of close monitoring by the town council’s parks team, it has been determined that the bloom has now cleared.

This has been caused by a change in the weather.

The town council added it would continue to monitor the situation for any further changes.

A spokesperson said: “The situation has been carefully monitored by the Warminster Town Council parks team and following a change in the weather, the bloom has now cleared.

“Warminster Town Council will continue to monitor the water regularly and keep in regular communication with The Environment Agency.”

Boats will once again be available to hire from the Lake Pleasure Grounds on Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21, from 11am until 4pm.

This will cost £6 for half an hour in a boat and £4 for a canoe.
