Multiple speeding drivers have been caught by police lying in wait on a road labelled a “race track” by residents.

Officers from Wiltshire Police were stationed at Hungerdown Lane in Chippenham on Sunday, July 14, in order to catch motorists breaking the 30mph speed limit.

Images shared by police on social media showed that several drivers were caught travelling well over the limit.

Five drivers were clocked between 43mph and 46mph.

The speed checks were carried out following feedback from the community about excess speed on the busy route.

Residents have often highlighted Hungerdown as a problem area for speeding in the town over the last year and the road has been one of the most frequently visited areas for speed checks.

Speaking on Facebook, one person said: “It's particularly bad at night after say 9pm.

“Can hear them racing up and down.”

Another added: “I was driving up Hungerdown Lane two months ago at 30mph and someone overtook me.

“I’ve lived in Chippenham all my life and never have I seen a car overtake there, it’s getting ridiculous.”
