Work to improve road safety, particularly at school pick up and drop off time, in Bradford on Avon will be carried out by Wiltshire Council later this month.

The Bradford on Avon Local Highway and Footway Improvement Group (LHFIG) and Bradford on Avon Town Council have been awarded funding to improve Berryfield Road and the area around Christchurch Primary School so it is safer for pedestrians and residents by deterring through traffic and reallocating road space.

A temporary road closure will be in place from Monday, July 29 to Friday, August 23 to allow the council to complete the work safely.

Cllr Nick Holder, cabinet member for highways, said: “These plans were developed following concerns from local residents about increased through traffic in the area and pedestrian safety, particularly at school times.

“The works will be carried out during the school summer holidays to minimise disruption.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time, but we look forward to the completed initiative providing a safer route for local residents and school children which will deter through traffic on this route and encourage greater uptake of walking and wheeling to and from school.

“This initiative highlights our Business Plan commitment to improving road safety, and this improvement will make this route safer for all road users.”

Berryfield Road will be narrowed at its junction with Bath Road with a new gateway surface treatment and improved crossing facility for pedestrians and the junction of Berryfield Road and Sladesbrook will see a gateway treatment installed.

Additionally, there will be extra pedestrian space created outside of Christchurch Primary School to deter parked cars from blocking the entrance and ‘school keep clear’ markings will be provided to prevent parking at peak times and a new ‘no waiting at any time’ double yellow line will be added along the bend of the road leading to Manor Gardens.
