Plans for a 30mph speed limit could be implemented to reduce “danger” in a Wiltshire village described as a “rat run”.

Foxham is one of several villages in the parish of Bremhill, between Calne and Chippenham, where residents have complained of increasing traffic trying to avoid the two towns.

Villagers have raised fears that the uptick in motorists has led to more speeding on the narrow country lanes through the parish and increased conflict with pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders.

After the parish council raised concerns, Wiltshire Council is now running a consultation on lowering the speed limit on the main routes through Foxham to 30mph.

If approved, the 40mph speed limit would be lowered on routes officially known as C118 and C111 in the village, to “avoid danger” to those using the roads.

A council spokesperson said: “These proposals are being taken forward on behalf of Bremhill Parish Council and Calne Local Highway and Footpath Improvement Group as a result of concerns in the local community.

“An assessment has been undertaken in line with Wiltshire Council’s adopted policy on setting local speed limits and found that the criteria had been satisfied for the introduction of a lower speed limit.”

Residents can have their say on the plans until Monday, July 22.
