RAIN showers in the morning and afternoon failed to dampen the spirits of the hundreds of people who visited the Trowbridge Midsummer Festival on Saturday (June 15).

The event was staged by Trowbridge Town Council and Trowbridge Town Hall Trust for the second year in succession in the Town Park.

It is thought to have attracted more than 1,000 people – way down on the 2,500 who attended the same event last year.

The festival featured more than 40 food and drink stalls, including a large food market run by Vegan Fairs, as well as live music, children’s activities and entertainment.

Trowbridge mayor Stephen Cooper, who attended with his grandsons Alexander and Oscar, said: “It was a good do all round. I think everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

“The music line-up was excellent in the evening and the vendors were all there and there was a marvellous selection of food and drink.

“It was good that so many of the acts, stalls and vendors were local. It is a real boost to the local economy.”

Isabelle Compton, the town council’s events and community engagement manager, said: “We thought it went very well. We have had lots of positive feedback.

“Of course, the weather was not ideal but even still the community came out and supported all our vendors and all our entertainment acts and music, so we thought it went very well.

“A lot of people came at different times of the day, some people just came in the morning and watched the kids entertainment and then left, some people stayed all day and some people just came for the cool bands in the evening.

“Of course the weather, the lovely British weather, did put a damper on it compared to last year when there was a huge heat wave but unfortunately we can’t control the weather.

“Even still, we are definitely chalking it up as a success.”

The entertainment included Jelly Fish Theatre, Familia De La Noche, the Last Baguette Theatre Company, the SASS Circus School, as well as aerial silks, face painting, juggling, puppetry, stiltwalkers and a Bubbleologist.

On a community stage in the Town Hall Sensory Garden, there were performances by the Clarity Community Choir, Trowbridge Ukulele Club, the Starry Eyes Performance Foundation, the Trowbridge Town Singers, the Peace Choir and the Rock Choir.

The main stage saw evening performances by The Renewal Gospel Choir, Daisy Chapman, Frankisoul and headliners The Entitled Sons.
