A driver who sped past the scene of a serious crash on the A303 has blamed the police officers who caught him.

Wiltshire Police officers had already been attending a scene on the A303 on Tuesday morning, May 28, after the driver of a red Mini Cooper flipped their car, crashed into a tree and fled the scene.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service were also called to attend the scene after the damage caused was described as "significant".

"From the damage to the vehicle we are concerned that they will need medical attention," said PC Daniel Laurie, from Wiltshire Police's Road Unit.

Despite the seriousness of the crash, officers were forced to divert their attention when a second driver sped past the scene of the crash travelling at over 100mph.

The driver continued speeding past a visible police vehicle and was then pulled over further down on the A303 by officers from the Road Policing Unit.

"This driver had only just passed police dealing with an RTC and it was also our fault if they turn to a 'life of crime'," a spokesperson for the policing unit said.

Officers have now warned motorists to be particularly careful and slow down along the A303 after several accidents have taken place on the road.
