The Conservative candidate standing in Chippenham has said he was “somewhat surprised” by the announcement of a July election.

Rishi Sunak has declared that the general election will be held on July 4, which means that candidates across Wiltshire have about six weeks to convince residents that they’re right for the constituency.

The sudden announcement is thought to have been a surprise for many Tory MPs.

In Chippenham, Nic Puntis is replacing Michelle Donelan as the Conservative candidate, and is hoping he’ll get to represent the area in parliament.

Wiltshire Times: Mr Puntis said he is "relishing the opportunity" to speak to residents.

He said: "I was somewhat surprised by the announcement, but I have been preparing for this day since I was selected and as the Prime Minister stated, it is in the second half of the year - just!

“Our country is facing enormous challenges and Rishi Sunak gets my full support as he leads the Conservative Party into this General Election.

“With six weeks to go I am relishing the opportunity to speak to every resident that lives within this community, the community that I have spent my entire life living and working in.

“I would be extremely proud and honoured to represent all of them as their MP."

MPs Danny Kruger, Andrew Murrison and Michelle Donelan have also been approached for comment.
