A couple in their 90s living at a Trowbridge care have thrown a party for residents to help celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary.
To help Alan and Dorothy Jolley celebrate 70 years of happy marriage, carers at Trowbridge Oaks Bupa Care Home arranged a party for family and friends, complete with a visiting pianist, decorations, and a homemade cake.
The head chef decorated their cake with tulips –a very special flower for the couple – that has cropped up at every life event for Alan, 94, and Dorothy, 92.
Dorothy said: "We had a lovely day celebrating. We loved seeing our family and reminiscing over 70 amazing years spent together.
“The flowers and pianist made the entire day very romantic; our carers did a fantastic job of making us feel special.”
The couple, who both come from London, were evacuated from their homes in the early 1940s during the German Blitz of the city during the Second World War. Alan went to Cornwall while Dorothy went to Yorkshire.
They first met while working for the Metropolitan Police force in Islington, London, where both were on duty for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953.
Soon they became inseparable as their connection blossomed, leading to their marriage in 1954, that saw them settle down in Welling, Kent, for most of their married life.
They went on to have two children, Anne and Christina, and four grandchildren, Daniel, Samuel, Lewis and Rachel.
The couple’s daughter, Chris Kay, attended the party hosted at Trowbridge Oaks.
She said: “Thank you so very much to all the staff and carers at Trowbridge Oaks who made today’s celebration incredibly special.
“It really was perfect, from the flowers to the food, to the pianist, and especially the love that everyone showed my family.”
The couple have been residents at the Trowbridge-based care home, since moving in two years ago and are renowned for their unwavering dedication and love for one another.
Linda Watts, home manager at Trowbridge Oaks Bupa Care Home, said: "Alan and Dorothy’s love story is truly inspiring.
“It's heart-warming to see the joy they bring to one another and to all of us here at Trowbridge Oaks.
“We feel privileged to be part of their lives and celebrate this remarkable milestone with them."
