One of Wiltshire's busiest main roads is to be closed at night for three weeks.
Wiltshire Council says it is “continuing its investment into the county’s roads” by resurfacing the A350 Beanacre Road in Melksham.
The A350 is a key north–south primary route through Wiltshire from the M4 motorway to Poole in Dorset.
The works will lead to diversions through villages such as Shaw and Box for traffic that would normally use the busy trunk road during the evenings.
The work will see the road closed at night, from 7pm to 6am each weekday, from Monday, March 4 until Friday, March 22.
The road will be open as normal during the daytime and throughout the weekends for the duration of the works. To minimise disruption as much as possible, the work will be completed in phases.
Cllr Caroline Thomas, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by these essential works to resurface this busy part of the A350 in Melksham, but the road is deteriorating and this does need to be done.
“There is, of course, no good time to close a main road, but we are doing all we can to minimise disruption by completing the work in phases and at night, ensuring the road is fully open throughout the day and at weekends.
“We do recognise that working through the night may cause some disturbance and we apologise to anyone that may be affected by this. "
The diversion route will take motorists on the A365 Bath Road towards Shaw just after Farmers Roundabout if heading through Melksham from the south. The diversion then heads to Box before taking the A4 to Chequers Roundabout in Chippenham.
Anyone wishing to access Beanacre, Lacock or other villages in the area can reach them on the A350, heading south from Chippenham.
While the road will be closed to through traffic, access will be maintained where possible and access to Foundry Close will be maintained at all times during the work.
The phases are:
· Phase one: March 4-7, work south of Foundry Close
· Phase two: March- 8-15, work north of Foundry Close
· Phase three: March 18 and 19, work south of Foundry Close
During the remaining days, the council will adjust the road’s ironwork and install new road markings.
