The iconic Wadworth Shires could be moved from Devizes to a nearby village, next to a pub alongside the Kennet & Avon Canal.
The horses, Sam and George, need a new field to call home, following the relocation of Wadworth & Co to the new Folly Road Brewhouse in Devizes and the proposed re-development of the Northgate Street site.
A planning application recently sent to Wiltshire Council suggests the Shire Horses and Sign Shop be housed beside The Barge Inn in Seend Cleeve.
The application states: “The Shire Horses will graze the paddocks and be visible from the footpaths and the Barge Inn, providing an attractive and welcoming site for customers, locals and visitors to the area.
“The Sign Shop is for the Brewery’s sign writer to create new and repair hanging and pictorial signs, such a traditional feature of Wadworth’s Pubs and Hotels.”
According to Wadworth & Co, Sam is the latest in a line of Shire horses which have served Wadworth for over 125 years.
George joined Sam in October 2022 and the pair are well-known throughout the area.
The first Shire horses were used to transport and deliver beers from the brewery.
Wiltshire Council will make its decision before Wednesday, March 13.
