Two weather warnings have been issued for Wiltshire while flood alerts remain in place for the saturated county.

The Met Office has put in a warning for dangerous levels of rain that runs from New Year’s Day evening into the morning for the south west.

The forecaster has warned that heavy rain falling on saturated ground is likely to cause some travel disruption.

Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible, with spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer it warns.

Bus and train services are also likely to be hit by the bad weather.

The following day, Tuesday sees another weather warning in place for wind which is expected to remain in place until 9pm for the same region.

Again the Met Office is warning of travel disruption in the area with damage to trees expected and coastal areas to be particularly affected.

Some short-term loss of power and other services is possible as well as delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.

A flood warning is in place for Bristol Avon from Chippenham to Melksham with river levels high due to continued heavy rainfall.

Swindon has been issued a flood alert for River Cole, Dorcan Brook and South Marston Brook with river levels peaking.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Following recent wet weather, further spells of rain, heavy in places are expected on Monday evening and overnight.

“Then after a brief gap, another spell of heavy rain is likely to spread northeastwards on Tuesday.

“The focus this evening and overnight will be across parts of southwest and southern England, south Wales and perhaps the Midlands.

“The worst of the rain should clear southwestern areas of England and south Wales by around the middle of Tuesday but could last into the evening across the northeast of the warning area.

“Strong winds will affect parts of the area, with a separate wind warning in place.”
