A Wiltshire football club whose main goal is promotion has submitted plans to install eight floodlights around its ground.
Trowbridge Town FC says it is the only County Town football club in the country that lacks a floodlit grass pitch enabling it to play games in the evening.
The club’s chairman Andy Meaden says the club is hoping the floodlights will enable to first team to gain promotion to a higher league and secure Trowbridge Town FC’s future for generations to come.
The First Team managed by Ryan Baggs currently play in the Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division.
They topped the Premier Division league table with 80 points last season, six ahead of their nearest rivals Devizes Town FC.
But the team were unable to gain promotion because their ground doesn’t meet the Football Association standards demanded by higher leagues.
In a statement, the club said: “After six months of discussions and planning revisions, Trowbridge Town FC are pleased to announce that we have this evening submitted to Wiltshire Council an important planning application to secure the future of the club for generations to come.
“We have submitted an application for eight LED floodlight pylons and dugouts to meet FA Step 5 guidelines.
“These plans are imperative to our commitment to progress our football club across youth, into adults, all the way into our veteran's team.
Mr Meaden added: "We hope that after months of work to get within the guidelines laid down by Wiltshire Council’s planning department, working within the guidelines of the Trowbridge Bat Mitigation Strategy, that we will soon (subject to acceptance and approval) be able to bring everyone the good news that we can commence with the works laid down in the plans, whilst at the same time ensuring that the impact to local wildlife and local residents will be at the absolute minimum."
The town of Trowbridge has not had a grass floodlit football pitch since the old Frome Road site in 1997 and the club feels it will never have a better chance as a club to provide this facility.
The floodlights application is part of an ongoing programme to improve facilities at the Woodmarsh Ground ahead of the next season starting in August 2024.
