Wiltshire's 'most haunted' pubs revealed in new book

The list was released by Dr Paul Lee, the author of the recently published book UK Haunted Hospitality, which aims to catalogue the country’s “spectrally infested pubs, restaurants and hotels.”

The book represents years of research for the 52-year-old, with over 800 pubs and clubs compiled in the first of three volumes on the subject.

Dr Lee contacted as many “haunted venues” as possible and filled the book with first-hand accounts.

In total 15 pubs from Swindon and Wiltshire were listed, and some of the most chilling encounters can be found below.

The Red Lion Avebury

The Red Lion Avebury The most famous “haunted” Wiltshire pub is reportedly the home of “Florrie” a phantom who is said to regularly appear and cause mischief.

Florrie is believed to be the ghost of a 17th century landlord’s wife, who was murdered by her husband after having an affair.

Dr Lee claims there have been reports of poltergeist activity including beer taps being turned on and off, guests’ bed clothes being yanked off, and chandeliers spinning.

The Flemish Weaver Corsham

The Flemish Weaver Corsham (Image: Google Maps)One of the most shocking alleged encounters in the book is that of the High Street pub’s former landlady in 2010.

She claims she was pushed over twice and was hospitalised after “being tripped” and falling down the stairs.

Customers have also reported ghostly happenings such as moving glasses, bottles and doors.

The Clifton Swindon

The Clifton Swindon (Image: Google Maps)The pub is believed to have been built on the site of a convent or priory, much to the displeasure of a “spectral nun” who is now thought to walk the building as the resident ghost.

This myth is highlighted by the landlords who wrote on their website: “She has appeared most often in an upstairs bedroom, but regularly also ventures into the cellar and has sometimes been known to pop into the bar.”

The Three Crows Devizes

The Three Crowns (Image: Google Maps)This town centre pub is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a woman who died after being jilted at the altar.

There have been reported sightings of both her and former landlady Mrs Phipps, who has been blamed for prodding customers and slamming doors.

The Glue Pot Swindon

The Glue Pot A previous landlord claims he often saw a man in the cellar while the current landlord told Dr Lee he “feels” he is being watched by the man.

He also believes a “distressed” Victorian lady roams the premises and has even stroked his hair.
