Ben Short, land agent for Longleat and Cheddar Gorge & Caves, said: “There will be no vehicle or pedestrian access to the dam at all during the works period (aside from authorised works contractors and emergency access).

“Security fencing will be installed to prevent access at the white entrance barrier and also at the Sailing Club to form a safe working area for the contractors working on the project.

“The work will involve the installation of siphons from the lake over the roadway and down to the spillway below. This is required as a measure to be able to de-water the lake in the event of a flood risk.

“A ramp and raised roadway over the siphons will be constructed as part of the project to facilitate future access for vehicles and pedestrians going forwards once the roadway can be re-opened.

“It is intended that the car park area serving Shearwater will remain open for the duration of the works.”
