Two of Wiltshire’s most famous faces have hinted they might not be staying in the county for much longer.
Channel 4’s Gogglebox stars Giles Wood and Mary Killen, who have lived in Pewsey for 30 years, opened up on the highs and lows of rural living in their new book Country Life: A Story of Peaks and Troughs
In one section, the pair revealed they are considering leaving Wiltshire behind them and moving to London ahead of their final years.
Giles said: “Were I a shrub, I would say I have only tentatively put down roots here in Wiltshire.
"They are not yet thick or stubborn enough to prevent me from uprooting myself for the final chapter of my life.
"After 30 years, I am now ready to transplant myself again."
Opening up on the difficulties of living in a rural Wiltshire village, Mary, who is not able to drive, claimed the lack of a reliable bus service had left her missing out on social occasions.
She said: "As a woman who can’t drive, I have been exiled these past three decades to a village without a bus service.
"It means that, over the years, I’ve missed at least 600 London parties, gallery openings and book launches, to say nothing of memorial services and lectures and art exhibitions.
"I’m certain that a London dwelling would be the best choice for the final decade of life. It’s too much of a nuisance to visit someone who lives in the country, no matter how much you love them."
Mary believes that her friends and family would be “20 times” more likely to visit her in a London home than they are to trek to Pewsey for a catch up.
She has been able to keep herself busy over the years, however, through her career in writing and has published multiple books as well as working as an agony aunt for the spectator.
Unlike Mary, Giles has not worked for decades after the painter retired at the age of just 21.
While the couple may not be in Wiltshire for much longer, they continue to star on Channel 4 every week, with Giles recently shocking viewers by growing pondlife in an unusual kitchen item.
During a recent episode he left viewers, and Mary, in disbelief by producing a cafetiere filled with tadpoles.
The couple’s new book is now available.
